We have started climbing the charts. Already rising 9 spots in the last week, we hit #8 on the CMJ Jazz charts this week! Also, we have been in the studio all week with Larry Coryell and the Wide Hive Players. His debut record with Wide Hive will be released early next year. It will be amazing!!

It's almost time! We are gearing up for our fall release "Players II Guitar." This record features four legendary guitarists including Larry Coryell, Barry Finnerty, Harvey Mandel, and Wide Hive's own Calvin Keys all accompanied by the phenomenal Wide Hive Players. This record crosses the genres of jazz, funk, rock, and soul. It also appeals to different generations with its old school influence and modern day cutting-edge compositions. This record is already receiving an exciting buzz locally and in New York. The official release date is October 26. We are excited and proud of this collaborative record. O's Notes: This is a swinging blues & bebop session led by trombonist Mike Rinta. Kevin Zuffi (p), Tim Eschliman (b), Jimmy Sanchez (d) and Paul Brannan (sax) are the rest of the team and they play with a spirited bluesy feeling that is very engaging. The program is all originals composed by Mike and the band. We liked the Latin beat of "Ronnie" and were ready to dance on "Little Miss Leffler"! This is a fun session start to finish.

PHIL RANELIN

Esteemed jazz trombonist Phil Ranelin has been hard at work for the past few years. Although no official recordings of his own work have been released since 2004, he has compiled a range of recordings from live performances with his band Tribe Renaissance, that took place between 2002 and 2005. These recordings take the shape of the appropriately titled album Reminiscence.

Tribe Renaissance, not to be confused with the Tribe, Ranelin's avante-garde jazz group from the early to mid 1970's, is, in essence, the Tribe of the 2000s, as they are both similar in instrumentation and composition. They are known for their influences from traditional African music, some direct aspects making their way into these more modern pieces.

Beginning with a somewhat disorganized intro of “A Tear in Elmina”, it leads into a much more traditional sounding piece. The song features a natural sounding call-and-response section between the saxophone and trombone, a characteristic often seen in this genre. To a casual listener, though, it seems that the song continually loses and regains its tune with the focus on instruments continually changing. Naturally it is safe to believe that this is due to the free aspect of avante-garde music of any kind.
